 "Mostly a good computer, with one major flaw" 2009-08-02

Here's the flaw: it overheats, causing spontaneous shutdown to prevent damage. The cooling system is poorly designed, with the cooling fan positioned on the bottom and the "feet" being very short, meaning that heat builds up quickly when the notebook is placed on a flat surface or on your lap. It may work ok with a cool surface such as metal or glass. I ended up having to buy a 17" cooling pad (not easy to find) from Belkin to avoid this problem and since buying it have had no further issues.



Aside from that issue, there are many pros. It is a great looking laptop, with a decent hard drive, good memory and processing speed with lots of bells and whistles that consumers are beginning to expect from a notebook - webcam, microphone, memory card reader, hdmi port and even a remote control so you can sit on your couch and watch movies - although you really won't need it as a 17" screen is too small to have more than 2 people comfortably watch a movie. If you have a TV with a VGA/HDMI port, it should be pretty simple to hook the laptop up and watch a movie that way.



The numberpad was a big draw for me, but you can't get it on a laptop with a less than 17" screen size.



One other feature I did not like was the "quickplay" and "dvd" buttons on the control console could be accidentally touched and turn the computer on. For one thing, this made these buttons difficult to clean after a year of use and for another, I got tired of the computer suddenly bogging down because I accidentally pressed one of these buttons and it opened HP's resource-chomping quickplay...
